Update on Finn (Mr Wobble)
Pictured here with Vet Josh Shepton Vets who has worked on Finns Case ..
The blood results came back on Wednesday negative for Neospora (Thank goodness) ..
X-rays were then taken on Thursday focusing around the neck and spine which all looked okay ..
Through process of elimination Finn has been diagnosed with a condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia which the vet had mentioned the possibility of this at the beginning..
Cerebellar Hypoplasia is a condition where the cerebellum fails to fully develop. It is usually caused by underdevelopment of the cerebellum while the puppy is in utero. Uncoordinated movements such as abnormal gait, general clumsiness and unsteadiness on paws.. frequent falling over , Tremors , are all symptoms.
As a young puppy these symptoms would not have been seen until Finn started walking.
There is no cure but dogs with this condition go on to live normal happy lives.. they are not in any pain !
What is interesting and something I will follow up is whilst this condition can be caused by intrinsic factors due to genetic mutations and is known to be an inherited disorder in Airedales, Chow Chows, Boston Terriers , and Bull Terrier Breeds there are also extrinsic factors… poor nutrition of the mother, infectious diseases such as canine herpesvirus, canine distemper, fungal disease, tick-borne diseases, intestinal parasites.. Finn came to us so say microchipped and registered , vaccinated flea and wormed . He was very small and weighed just under 2kg, his microchip was an overseas chip and unregistered, (NB: he is registered to us) I doubt very much he was vaccinated .. which we will have done in a couple of weeks …
Finn was purchased from a farm in Trowbridge but I don’t know where and ended up in minehead ..
